Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about finding a church in the UK — from denominations and service times to visiting for the first time.
How do I find a church near me in the UK?
Enter your postcode on the Nearby Church homepage to see all Christian churches within your chosen radius. You can filter by denomination (Anglican, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, and more) and adjust the search radius from 1 to 20 miles. All data comes from OpenStreetMap and is free to use without an account.
What denominations can I search for?
Nearby Church covers all major Christian denominations in the UK including Anglican (Church of England and Church of Wales), Roman Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, URC (United Reformed Church), Salvation Army, and more. Use the denomination filter on the search results page to narrow your results.
Can I visit a church without being a member?
Yes — virtually all Christian churches in the UK welcome visitors of all backgrounds. You do not need to be a member, be baptised, or have any prior experience of attending church. Most churches will greet visitors warmly and there is usually no obligation to participate in anything you feel uncomfortable with.
What are typical church service times in the UK?
Most UK churches hold their main Sunday service in the morning, typically at 10:00 or 10:30am, with some holding an earlier 8:00am traditional service and an evening service at 6:00 or 6:30pm. Many churches also hold midweek services, usually on Wednesday evenings. Service times vary by church — check the individual church listing or the church's own website for confirmed times.
What is the difference between Anglican, Catholic, and Baptist churches?
Anglican churches (Church of England / Church of Wales) are part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, with the Archbishop of Canterbury as their spiritual leader. Services follow a liturgical structure, often using the Book of Common Prayer or Common Worship. Roman Catholic churches are in communion with the Pope in Rome and follow the Roman Rite, with Mass as the central act of worship. Baptist churches are independent congregations that emphasise believer's baptism (baptism of adults by full immersion) and typically have a less formal, more Bible-focused style of worship.
How accurate is the church data on Nearby Church?
Church data is sourced from OpenStreetMap, a community-maintained open database used by millions of people worldwide. While the data is generally reliable, details such as service times, contact information, and opening hours may not always be up to date. We recommend checking the church's own website or calling ahead before your visit.
Is Nearby Church free to use?
Yes, completely free. No account is required and there are no adverts. The site uses open data from OpenStreetMap and OpenStreetMap's Overpass API, so there are no paid data sources. If you find it useful, you can support the project by telling others about it.
How do I get directions to a church?
On any church listing, tap or click the "Directions" link to open Google Maps with the church's location pre-filled. You can then choose your preferred mode of transport — driving, walking, cycling, or public transport.
My church is not listed — how can I add it?
Church data comes from OpenStreetMap. To add a missing church, create a free account at openstreetmap.org and add the church as a node or area with the tag amenity=place_of_worship and religion=christian. Once the data is updated in OpenStreetMap, it will appear in Nearby Church the next time that area is searched. In the future, we plan to offer church editor accounts — letting individual churches claim their listing and manage their own information such as service times, contact details, and photos directly on Nearby Church.
What does "church near me" actually mean?
"Church near me" typically means the closest Christian church to your current location. Nearby Church helps you find exactly that — enter your UK postcode and we'll show you all churches within your chosen radius, sorted by distance. You can also use the "Use my location" button on the homepage to detect your location automatically.
